Professor Nicola Sibson
Nicola Sibson is Professor of Imaging Neuroscience at the University of Oxford, and Supernumerary Fellow of University College, Oxford. On completion of her Ph.D. in Neuroimaging at the University of Cambridge, Nicola spent four years as a postdoctoral associate at Yale University, before joining the MRC Biochemical and Clinical Magnetic Resonance Unit in Oxford. Subsequently, she moved to the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics as a University Research Lecturer, where she established The Experimental Neuroimaging Group. Nicola was recruited to the Oxford Institute for Radiation Oncology, Department of Oncology, in 2007.
The overall goal of Nicola’s research is to identify ways in which the tumour microenvironment, and innate immune response in particular, can be exploited to improve diagnosis, monitoring and therapy in secondary brain cancer or metastasis. Her group has particular interests in improving therapy in brain metastasis by developing methods to facilitate drug access across the blood-brain barrier, and in developing novel imaging methods for early detection and improved delineation of brain metastases to enable more effective treatment. These projects are currently moving towards clinical trial. Nicola has given numerous plenary lectures, including the prestigious British Neuropathological Society Lecture at the Neuro-Oncology Society Annual Conference, and serves on a number of national and international scientific advisory boards.
