Professor Emily Flashman
Emily studied Biochemistry at the University at Southampton, then gained her D.Phil. in Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Oxford with Prof. Hugh Watkins, using protein biochemistry methods to investigate the effects of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy-causing mutations on the interactions between proteins in heart muscles. She then moved to the Department of Chemistry to investigate the mechanism of human oxygen-sensing enzymes with Prof. Chris Schofield. Half way through a Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship, Emily began to investigate the role of plant oxygen-sensing enzymes in adaptive responses to flooding. For this Emily was awarded a BBSRC New Investigator Award and more recently an ERC Consolidator Award. Emily has also been awarded a L'Oreal For Women In Science Fellowship (2011) and the 2018 University of Kent Wain Award for Excellence in the Biosciences. Much of Emily's group is now focussed on understanding the molecular mechanisms underpinning plant responses to hypoxia, for which chemical probes developed through redOx_KCL will be a great asset.
